There is a synergy that occurs in groups that has the potential to expand understanding of our selves and others. Both the diversity we carry inside and the diversity we experience outside expands our own perception of our place in the world and the gifts we have to contribute. It teaches us to recognize that not only do we need to learn to stay true to ourselves when we are surrounded by others that think differently, feel differently and see things differently than we do but how to respect and listen when we hear something we don’t understand or agree with. This is what makes a group stronger as a decision making body and a creative force when working together.
Part of facilitating any group is establishing as the basis of intelligence a certain appreciation for diversity. I have worked with many groups in business settings, academic settings and retreat settings and the foundation of all my work in these areas is a deep respect for the power of diversity to teach and facilitate transformation.
